REVERSE SAFARI is a series of four artworks featuring a safari jeep in a vast, safari-like landscape. Inside the jeep, figures are looking outward. Their eyes are carved out in the front layer of the work and positioned in a layer behind. This construction makes the eyes appear to follow the viewer from every angle.
Around the image, the text reads: “CAREFUL! IT’S WATCHING US. STAY CALM AND KEEP YOUR EYES ON IT.” These words shift the perspective: the viewer becomes the object of observation. The usual relationship between observer and observed is reversed; it is not the animal that is being watched, but the person standing in front of the artwork.
The series plays with looking, being looked at, and the viewer’s position within the image.
