ALL EYES ON IO at BUTT FILMFESTIVAL

The installation ALL EYES ON IO explores the complex relationship between sight, power, and control. In the works SILVER COLORED COW and ARGUS IN THE CINEMA, the eye becomes not just a sense, but an instrument of surveillance and influence. In SILVER COLORED COW, we see the mythical Io, transformed into a silver cow, struck by Zeus’ lightning. The surrounding text – “TURN YOUR MISTRESS IN A SILVER COLORED COW AND GIVE IT AS A GIFT TO YOUR WIFE” – adds a layer of provocation and cultural commentary, recalling how power can manifest through objectification and observation. ARGUS IN THE CINEMA places a pink, hundred-eyed giant in a cinema, fully equipped with eyes, a mask, and explicit sexual characteristics, creating a visual interplay between voyeurism, public and private space, and the absurdity of constant observation. The installation invites reflection on how observation shapes behavior, how visibility can imply control, and how these mechanisms penetrate everyday life—from mythological stories to Bentham’s Panopticon and Foucault’s theories of discipline. In den Werken SILVER COLORED COW und ARGUS IN THE CINEMA wird das Auge nicht nur zu einem Sinnesorgan, sondern zu einem Instrument der Überwachung und Einflussnahme. In SILVER COLORED COW sehen wir die mythische Io, die in eine silberne Kuh verwandelt wurde und vom Blitz des Zeus getroffen wird. Der umgebende Text – „TURN YOUR MISTRESS IN A SILVER COLORED COW AND GIVE IT AS A GIFT TO YOUR WIFE“ – fügt eine Schicht Provokation und kultureller Kommentare hinzu und erinnert daran, wie Macht durch Objektivierung und Beobachtung ausgeübt werden kann. ARGUS IN THE CINEMA platziert einen rosa, hundertäugigen Riesen in einem Kino, vollständig mit Augen, Maske und expliziten Geschlechtsmerkmalen ausgestattet, wodurch ein visuelles Zusammenspiel zwischen Voyeurismus, öffentlichem und privatem Raum und der Absurdität ständiger Beobachtung entsteht. Die Installation regt zur Reflexion darüber an, wie Beobachtung Verhalten formt, wie Sichtbarkeit Kontrolle implizieren kann und wie diese Mechanismen in den Alltag eindringen – von mythologischen Geschichten über Benthams Panoptikum bis hin zu Foucaults Disziplinierungstheorien. Das Werk schafft einen intensiven Dialog über Präsenz, Macht und das stets wachsame Auge, bei dem der Betrachter sowohl Subjekt als auch Objekt der Beobachtung wird.

In de werken SILVER COLORED COW en ARGUS IN THE CINEMA wordt het oog niet slechts een zintuig, maar een instrument van toezicht en invloed. In SILVER COLORED COW zien we de mythische Io, veranderd in een zilveren koe, getroffen door de bliksemschicht van Zeus. De omliggende tekst – “TURN YOUR MISTRESS IN A SILVER COLORED COW AND GIVE IT AS A GIFT TO YOUR WIFE” – voegt een laag van provocatie en culturele commentaar toe, en herinnert aan de manier waarop macht zich kan manifesteren door objectivering en observatie. ARGUS IN THE CINEMA plaatst een roze, honderdogige reus in een bioscoop, volledig voorzien van ogen, een mondkapje en expliciete geslachtskenmerken, waardoor een visueel samenspel ontstaat tussen voyeurisme, publieke en private ruimte, en de absurditeit van constante waarneming. De installatie nodigt uit tot reflectie over hoe observatie gedragingen vormt, hoe zichtbaarheid controle kan impliceren, en hoe deze mechanismen doordringen in het alledaagse leven, van mythologische verhalen tot de Panopticon van Bentham en Foucaults theorieën over disciplinering. Dans SILVER COLORED COW, nous voyons la mythique Io, transformée en vache argentée, frappée par la foudre de Zeus. Le texte environnant – « TURN YOUR MISTRESS IN A SILVER COLORED COW AND GIVE IT AS A GIFT TO YOUR WIFE » – ajoute une couche de provocation et de commentaire culturel, rappelant comment le pouvoir peut se manifester par l’objectivation et l’observation. ARGUS IN THE CINEMA place un géant rose aux cent yeux dans un cinéma, entièrement pourvu d’yeux, d’un masque et de caractéristiques sexuelles explicites, créant un jeu visuel entre voyeurisme, espace public et privé, et l’absurdité de l’observation constante. L’installation invite à réfléchir sur la manière dont l’observation façonne le comportement, comment la visibilité peut impliquer le contrôle et comment ces mécanismes s’immiscent dans la vie quotidienne – des récits mythologiques au Panopticon de Bentham et aux théories de la discipline de Foucault. El texto circundante – “TURN YOUR MISTRESS IN A SILVER COLORED COW AND GIVE IT AS A GIFT TO YOUR WIFE” – añade una capa de provocación y comentario cultural, recordando cómo el poder puede manifestarse a través de la objetivación y la observación. ARGUS IN THE CINEMA coloca un gigante rosa de cien ojos en un cine, completamente equipado con ojos, mascarilla y características sexuales explícitas, creando un juego visual entre voyeurismo, espacio público y privado y la absurdidad de la observación constante.
