YOU THINK I’M NO FASHION depicts a chimpanzee with its back turned to the viewer, staring into a real hand mirror. In the reflection, its face looks back, winking and flirting. From its anus protrude blades of grass with a flower: a direct reference to the observed behavior of chimpanzees carrying grass as a form of fashion.
The work balances humor, curiosity, and discomfort, layering animal behavior and human projection over one another. The paintings function as vases: the opening invites the viewer to add a flower themselves, allowing the image to continually change and become personal. At the top appears the text YOU THINK I’M NO FASHION, at the bottom I BRING YOU FLOWERS.
