USING WALLS TO BUILD BRIDGES is a colorful mural on the facade of Cafe Zomers en Zomers in Den Bosch, created after the 2021 Curfew Riots. During this period, many shops and restaurants were boarded up preventively. Frank Willems, De Spuitbuskunstenaar (Jan-Henk van Ieperen) and Faye van Ieperen brought life and color to the wooden panels. At the center is a burning sun held by various hands, with the text USING WALLS TO BUILD BRIDGES in graffiti style displayed at the top. The artwork symbolizes connection, resilience, and community strength during turbulent times.

COFFEE TO GO is a colorful artwork on the façade panels of POMPEN EN VERLOUW in Den Bosch, created after the 2021 Curfew Riots. During this period, many shops and restaurants boarded up their windows as a precaution. Together with other artists, I brought life and color to these wooden panels. My contribution shows a hand holding a cup of Blommers Koffie, surrounded by the words POMPEN EN VERLOUW and COFFEE TO GO. The work symbolizes resilience, community, and the simple joy of a cup of coffee, while also serving as an invitation to take coffee to go.

The installation ALL EYES ON IO explores the complex relationship between sight, power, and control. In the works SILVER COLORED COW and ARGUS IN THE CINEMA, the eye becomes not just a sense, but an instrument of surveillance and influence. In SILVER COLORED COW, we see the mythical Io, transformed into a silver cow, struck by Zeus’ lightning. The surrounding text – “TURN YOUR MISTRESS IN A SILVER COLORED COW AND GIVE IT AS A GIFT TO YOUR WIFE” – adds a layer of provocation and cultural commentary, recalling how power can manifest through objectification and observation. ARGUS IN THE CINEMA places a pink, hundred-eyed giant in a cinema, fully equipped with eyes, a mask, and explicit sexual characteristics, creating a visual interplay between voyeurism, public and private space, and the absurdity of constant observation. The installation invites reflection on how observation shapes behavior, how visibility can imply control, and how these mechanisms penetrate everyday life—from mythological stories to Bentham’s Panopticon and Foucault’s theories of discipline. The work creates an intensive dialogue about presence, power, and the ever-watchful eye, where the viewer becomes both subject and object of observation.

During the corona lockdown, Frank Willems created art on the new SCRATCH OFF, SCRATCH ON beer bottles commissioned by Bavaria and Manify. By scratching and drawing, he transformed the bottles into unique artworks. During Manify’s “Out of Office” livestream home drinks session, viewers could submit their inspiration, resulting in personal, playful designs on the bottles. The project brings together creativity, interaction, and the intimate experience of being together, even from a distance.

FREESTYLE SCRATCHING BAVARIA BEER BOTTLES for MANIFY

In this work by Frank Willems for the new passage between huis73 and the city library, a bookshelf appears from which little creatures have pulled out books. In the books, they discover new skills and adventures, such as playing music and drawing. Around them, the poetic text by Doeko L. embraces the scene, bringing reading and learning to life in a playful and narrative way.

A powerful mural in which Frank Willems used spray cans and stencils to apply the Andy Souwer Kickboxing University logo. The clean stencil shapes and raw spray paint give the kickboxing school an energetic, contemporary look that matches the intensity of the sport.

A collaborative artwork by Manify, JORCUSTOM, and Frank Willems, where denim serves as an expressive canvas. The back features a full field of leopard print as an energetic base. Over it runs a cross with the text: GRAB A DRINK, HAVE A CHAT, SHOW YOUR DANCE MOVES. Above this cross are two hands: the lower holding a glass, the upper pouring from a bottle — choice of beer, red wine, white wine, or champagne. With customizable colors and selectable elements, each jacket becomes a unique, personally curated artwork.

ACT LIKE A MONKEY transforms the window frames of an old building at the Tramkade in Den Bosch into a colorful story. From left to right, we follow a monkey: first chilling and hungry, then looking up at a banana tree, next climbing towards the tree, and finally hanging from the highest window frame. The story reveals a subtle irony: all that climbing wasn’t necessary, because with money the monkey could have simply accessed a banana vending machine. A playful reflection on desire, effort, and convenience in everyday life.
