Commissioned by Warner Music NL for Fred again.., YOUR HEAD SHAKES OUT YOUR HEART is a visual and conceptual representation of the unparalleled energy of his performances. This piece was specially designed for his shows at the Ziggo Dome Amsterdam in 2023 and is inspired by an iconic moment during Fred again..’s legendary set at Rock Werchter. During that performance, the crowd’s sheer intensity and movement caused his drum machine to vibrate out of place, forcing a festival crew member to hold it steady. The artwork captures this explosive synergy between artist and audience through two layers of meaning. The primary text, YOUR HEAD SHAKES OUT YOUR HEART, symbolizes the physical and emotional surrender to the music—how rhythms and melodies resonate through both body and mind. But under blacklight, a second hidden message is revealed: YOUR HANDS SHAKES OUT THEIR HEARTS. This concealed element emphasizes the reciprocal energy between Fred again.. and his audience, where not only does his music move the hearts of listeners, but their collective movement and enthusiasm also fuel his performance. With a dynamic and raw visual style, the piece echoes the unfiltered, organic energy of Fred again..’s live shows. YOUR HEAD SHAKES OUT YOUR HEART (COMMISSIONED)
In 2021, during the curfew riots and the corona pandemic, many shops and restaurants in 's-Hertogenbosch were preventively boarded up. From this unexpected emptiness arose the initiative USINGWALLSTOBUILDBRIDGES. The owner of Pompen & Verlouw posted a call on Instagram to paint his wooden panels, after which Frank Willems immediately got in touch. Together with Jan-Henk van Ieperen and Fleur Blom, he mobilized a group of artists within 24 hours and received permission from the municipality to take to the streets. During a weekend, these artists gave the closed shop windows a new creative meaning, transforming the panels into vibrant artworks radiating hope, connection, and resilience. For the urban festival OP OOST!, the skatepark at Oosterplas in Den Bosch has been completely repainted and adorned with new murals and tags by Frank Willems and the Oost crew. Frank Willems’ murals bring playful and cheeky images to life: on the park’s floor, you see a large monkey performing a kickflip in three steps; on the side of a ramp, a small monkey rolls a trick on inline skates; near the seating area, a monkey raises its hand, and when you sit down, you humorously see his little penis between your legs, accompanied by the text “WAN’NA BE LIKE A MONKEY”. MURAL at SKATEPARK OOSTERPLAS
For the Bouwmaat XXL Festival, I realized, on behalf of SPS and Zinsser, five large barrels as standing tables, painted in three variations. The first variation shows a bull with bull’s eye eyes, an ear tag with 1, 2, 3, and a yellow area with “BULL'S EYE” as a reference to Zinsser Bulls Eye Primer. The second variation depicts a painter on a small ladder, rolling paint, with the words “EASY, PERFECT, SMOOTH,” referring to SPS wall paints. The third variation combines both images, where the two styles meet. On behalf of Tim Haars, LEE and STREETSMART Amsterdam, this denim jacket was created with the artwork WE ALL WOULD BE ROYAL. On the back, a majestic dog sits on a throne, crowned as royalty, with the text: “IF WE WOULD TAKE CARE OF PEOPLE, LIKE WE TAKE CARE OF OUR PETS, WE ALL WOULD BE ROYAL.” The work contrasts societal indifference and emphasizes the gap between caring for pets and neglecting vulnerable people. On behalf of Kings of Colors for their project Container Art at Kapelaan Koopmansplein in Den Bosch, six waste containers have been transformed into a visual story. On each container, a little monkey takes the lead in a short, humorous tale. On the first container, the monkey waves happily with the text MONKEY SAYS HI!, on the second, it looks around with its hand over its eyes and the text MONKEY IS LOOKING FOR BANANA. The third container shows the monkey cheering with its arms raised upon finding the banana: MONKEY SEES BANANA. On the fourth, the monkey runs on enthusiastically: RUN MONKEY RUN. The fifth container captures the comedic moment when the monkey slips on a banana peel: WATCH OUT MONKEY, and finally, the monkey lies on the ground with the message: MONKEY SAYS CLEAN UP YOUR MESS.
