Wall-mounted artwork with repeated text "MORE TRAINS MORE MONEY" above a wooden cabinet with books and plants.

PLATAAN (COMMISSIONED) – Painting

This artwork was created in commission for the action group Save the Plane Trees (Red de Platanen), which advocates for the preservation of the mature plane trees along Boschveldweg in ’s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. The work was inspired by plans to expand the railway, a development that would have required the removal of these longstanding trees.

The image depicts a train passing alongside the trees, its wagons filled with money. The money serves as a symbol of the economic interests often associated with large infrastructure projects. In contrast, the plane trees represent continuity, nature, and the character of the local environment.

Surrounding the image is the text: “MORE TRAINS, MORE MONEY, SAVE SOME MONEY, SAVE THE TREES.” The phrase highlights the tension between economic growth and the preservation of existing green spaces. The artwork reflects on the choices made in shaping public space and invites consideration of the balance between development and conservation.
